When I returned home one cold wet November night to discover that an upstairs pipe burst, which had been running for several days and had taken down the ceiling of my kitchen, destroyed the original Victorian maple floors and wrecked most of the cabinets. I began a journey of discovery into the wonderful world of Kitchen replacements. Initially I went into survival mode…stop the leak and get the emergency repair guys out to pump out the lake from my basement…and get the insurance estimates done.

My house is about a hundred years old and so replacing anything in it is expensive and painful. The other thing to get used to is living with pretty much constant craftsmen coming and going. I used a major hardware chain store as the master contractor for the project. What I discovered is that if you use one of the big guys to oversee the whole exercise all the craft and trade folk show up on time and finish on time…it’s amazing.

What I should have done better was budget. I admit I got a bit starry eyed and carried away and I’m, still paying off the bills. However my kitchen is glorious. Had I lived in San Jose…or any place close to San Jose I’m pretty sure I would have chosen HB Cabinets as my contractor for the cabinets.
